Local cheesemakers continue age-old techniques, creating unique flavors like Tolminc, the valley's most famous cheese. The famous Hiša Franko with michelin stars is also located in the heart of the valley.

Tolminc cheese is a true symbol of the Soča Valley's rich dairy tradition and proudly holds the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) certificate. This centuries-old cheese is crafted using traditional methods passed down through generations in the mountainous regions of Tolmin. Made from raw cow's milk of pasture-grazed cows, Tolminc has a unique, rich flavor profile—mild and slightly nutty when young, developing a robust and aromatic taste as it ages. Its PDO status ensures that every wheel of Tolminc is made to the highest standards, preserving its authenticity and cultural heritage.

Alongside other specialties are also sheep and goat cheeses. The valley’s diverse landscape also gives rise to unique cheeses infused with wild herbs (wild oregano) making the Soča Valley a must-visit destination for cheese lovers.

  • As the heart of the Soča Valley, the town of Tolmin is famous for its rich cheese-making tradition.
  • In the town center, you will have the chance to sample ten different varieties of local cheeses, primarily made from cow's milk, but also made from goats and cheep milk.
  • During the cheese tasting, a local guide will share insights into the unique characteristics and specificities of the region that influence cheese production.
  • Among the highlights is Tolminc cheese, the most famous cheese of the area, which holds a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. This designation ensures that all stages of milk production and cheese-making for Tolminc take place exclusively within the Soča Valley.
  • You will have the opportunity to taste cheeses from local dairies as well as other cheeses from nearby farms.
  • Additionally, you can enjoy a local specialty: Tolminski želodec, a traditional dry salami.
  • The cheeses will be paired with locally produced juice.
  • After the conclusion of the tasting, you can relax with a coffee or another drink at a nearby bar. Please note that these beverages are not included in the tasting and are payable separately.
  • You will also receive information about where to purchase these cheeses directly from local farmers.

Dantejeva jama se nahaja na slikovitem območju znamenite Tolminske soteske, kar ji daje še dodatni čar. Svojo izkušnjo plezanja v jamo lahko obogatite tudi z obiskom Tolminskih sotesk. Vstopnice se prodajajo ločeno pri vhodu v Tolminske soteske.

We recommend that you leave your car at the back of the Tolmin museum or in front of the public library in the Tolmin center..

UPORABNE INFORMACIJE
  • To taste cheeses, we recommend you to be on an empty stomach.
  • If you store cheese in a refrigerator you have to keep them out for a while, so that they reach the room temperature.
  • The cheeses to taste are of different typologies and seasonings. Tasting order depends on intensity of smell and taste.
  • A lot like a wine tasting, we work from mildest to strongest. You must start with cheeses with less intense flavour to end up with those of the most decided taste.
  • After cheese tasting you will not be hungry for some times/hours.
  • Activity is guided in English, Slovenian or Croatian language.
